The sights and sounds of nature can fill us with wonder. Migrating geese, fruit trees in blossom, the roiling ocean, the Grand Canyon, snow clad hills. It takes small reminders for us to switch back on to the beauty all around us, refreshed every day, every season, every year.
But looking around, we (that is, humans) have created such sights to instil wonder ourselves. The beauty of the Venetian palaces; the local church, mosque or temple; the houses we live in; the streets we drive along; the pyramids of Giza.
We walk around so immured in our own thoughts and so acclimatised to the lives we live, that we no longer see the wonder. We don’t see it in our everyday lives because it has become, well, everyday.
But our lack of appreciation can lead to a lack of expectation of ourselves. But it is time to ask the questions. How can we cultivate this beauty? How can we relish and promote these harvests of creativity and industry? How can we create our own marvels, our own treasures, the new spectacle?
I wonder.
