Proximity

We can enjoy things from a distance.

Our nature often pushes us to get closer to the things that we admire. Admiration, too easily becoming desire, leads to a craving to own.

Once we are there we can be beguiled by an alternative target, leaving us to ignore what once meant so much to us. Worse, to take it for granted.

Some things can be better admired from afar. Sometimes the price of proximity is too great, either getting there or being there. The story of Icarus is a parable of such a folly.

We believe in being passionate about achieving audacious goals and to have objects and objectives in our hearts and minds as we venture towards them. We try our hardest to align to three key principles:

  1. Focus – let’s choose the right target, the correct object of desire, the specific state of being. We don’t get anywhere if we start chasing squirrels.
  2. Congruent – no matter what the target, once we are there we must relish and value it. It’s essential that we value what we have and for something we have stretched to get, we must value it more.
  3. Undefined – we cannot be defined by our achievements or our acquisitions. We are defined by our actions and our interactions. Each failure is a learning opportunity, each success a chance for graceful reflection.

Avoid the “I’ll be happy when…” condition, it means that you’ll never be happy. Try to enjoy the view from wherever you are – every sight, every sound, no matter how far away.
