Our brains have evolved to examine the various outcomes of choices and future scenarios. This has led to humans making largely better decisions and outliving other species.
This ability to examine our own future selves and consider the permeations of future encounters is also responsible for conflict, anxiety and sub-optimum health.
When we are cognisant of a future challenge (an interview, a public speaking engagement, an expected argument) we can suffer for hours, days or weeks – our brains constantly examining anticipated scenarios. This can lead to physical changes with increased heart rate, poor sleep and an inability to either focus on the job at hand or relax.
Future challenges are part of our modern life and finding ways to combat the anxiety fueled by our minds trying to “prepare” us can help us maintain equilibrium. We should not avoid the challenges. Challenge is progress. Challenge is the source of satisfaction and self-esteem. Facing challenges, overcoming them, provides the experience and confidence to face the future with less anxiety and the strength to get to our best lives.
Bring them on.
